Report
And so to the seaside. To celebrate the nuptials of our erstwhile opener, Viscount Wilhelm von Brandt III (Jr.), the Gentlemen of Relish travelled en masse to the lovely. sun-kissed Isle of Wight. Following a splendid ceremony and some Powerpoint-enhanced speeches (well done, The Chair) it was soon 3pm on Saturday and time for stumps to plunge into sand, bats to be (suntan) oiled and balls to be lost in the sea. In true schoolboy fashion, the players lined up in height order and the two captains, von Brandt and de'Lightly, each took turns to select their motley crew. After some initial debate about some frankly unfathomable local rules, Brandt won at least one of the tosses, choosing to bat on a wicket that promised some turn out of the sandcastles (surely "footmarks" - Pitch Ed.)
Some meaty blows from into both the trees and the sea, along with some quick running and frankly lackadaisical fielding meant that von Brandt's bunch of cudgel-wielding Botham-ites reached a massive 82 off their ten overs; Will P-W starring with the bat before being caught in the deep off a skier. The frankly more elegant Gower-esque style of de'Lightly's team was less suited to the unusual conditions and they started their run chase slowly. In trouble, and requiring quite-a-few to win, Mikey managed to score twelve (12) off one ball and with a hugely-hungover Dave plunging full-length to make his ground and avoid a run-out in the last over, some scratching of heads and frantic adding-up drew the conclusion that the scores were in fact level and the match was declared a tie!
Well done everyone for entering into the spirit and to those who lugged all the equipment/beer to the beach. Same time next year? Anyone?
